Michael Jordan autographed rookie card sells for $2.7 million, another record

A Michael Jordan autographed rookie card hit a record price through a private sale, Goldin Auctions announced Tuesday. A 1986-87 Fleer Jordan autographed rookie card with a Mint 9 card grade and Gem-Mint 10 autograph grade by PSA (Professional Sports Authenticator) fetched $2.7 million, making it the most expensive Jordan rookie card known to the public.
This surpassed a $2.5 million auction sale of a different ’86 Fleer Jordan autographed rookie card with the same PSA 9/10 grades that occurred in late June through Joopiter, an auction house owned by musician Pharrell Williams.

“Signed rookie cards of greatest-of-all-time athletes, like Michael Jordan, represent the pinnacle of sports collectibles,” said Ken Goldin, founder and CEO of Goldin. “This record-breaking sale is a testament not only to Jordan’s enduring legacy but also to the recognition of aftermarket-signed cards, which are truly elite pieces of memorabilia, especially when in high grade.”
It’s another example of Jordan being the king of the sports card collectors market long after retiring from basketball.
A one-of-a-kind Jordan and Kobe Bryant 2007-08 Upper Deck Exquisite Collection dual Logoman (the NBA logo patch from each of their game-worn jerseys) autographed patch card became the most expensive public trading card sale ever in late August, selling for $12.932 million through Heritage Auctions.
The $2.7 million price on this latest ’86 Fleer Jordan autographed rookie card sale ranks tied for fourth on the all-time list of known Jordan card sales, according to Card Ladder, an online card sales database.
Out of 90 total examples of autographed Jordan 1986 Fleer cards in PSA’s database, only six have a 10 card grade. Four others have a 9 card grade. It’s very likely the PSA 10/10 Jordan Fleer autographed rookie cards would sell for a much higher price if they ever hit the market.
